Favor | "Shortcut to H-E-B"

Favor is H-E-B's delivery service, and "Shortcut to H-E-B" was their fall campaign. We worked directly with Favor's in-house agency, which kept the loop between script and set short. CamLock Films is an Austin video production company that has now shot a few rounds for Favor, and this one was pitched to be more kinetic than anything we had done for them before. The brief was easy to say and harder to shoot: a family is spiraling through a busy afternoon, and a Favor Runner magically appears with the groceries before anyone finishes their sentence. Action-movie camera language, domestic stakes, played straight.

Comedy dialogue lives or dies on timing, so the coverage was never the hard part. We drew traditional storyboards by hand and put the real prep into a rehearsal day that doubled as the wardrobe fitting. We recorded the cast running scenes on a phone, watched it back that night, and adjusted the beats before anyone was on the clock. By the time we rolled camera we already knew what was funny, which is the only way to shoot a joke in a :30. Our standing rule on this campaign was practical over VFX. The one exception we fought for was the Runner's frozen-time POV, the moment the spot hangs on, and it earned its own line in the budget.

We shot two days on location in Austin. I directed and shot it on Alexa with Angénieux glass, cast through Brad Burton Casting, and brought back Jake Somnath as the Runner. If you have clicked around this site you have probably seen Jake already. He's that good. I cut the spot in-house, Carl Fry handled VFX, and Black Market Media colored. The shorter lengths were built as their own executions with their own setups instead of straight cutdowns, which is the main reason we asked for a second day. It was the right call.

The other half of the campaign happened a few feet away. Megan Carroll, a director on our roster, shot the social concepts on iPhone with Favor's social team and a separate cast, scheduled into scenes that were already dressed and lit for the hero spot. That is how we like to produce social when the crew is already there for the same campaign. Native pieces feel organic and perform. A vertical crop of the broadcast cut never does. Final deliverables were the :30 for CTV, looping ads for out-of-home, and a set of social pieces. Favor keeps coming back, and for a Texas brand looking for a production partner that can build broadcast, OOH, and social in one shoot, this is what that looks like.
