J&J Exterminating: Comedy Spots That Move as Fast as the Expert

When J&J Exterminating set out to produce a broadcast comedy campaign, freelance producer Blair Jenkins reached out to Camlock Films, an Austin video production company she'd known since her agency days at GSD&M. This was a direct-to-brand engagement with agency-caliber creative leadership: Jenkins producing on the client side alongside freelance creative director Michelle John. The brief called for three 30-second broadcast spots, plus social content and photography, all from a single lean production.

The creative hinged on timing. The J&J expert knows your house so well he's magically bopping from room to room, already fixing the problem by the time you look over, finishing your sentences, and giving the dog a treat on his way out. Comedy dialogue like this lives or dies on performance and pacing, so we cast Austin-based actor Ryan Kober, whose sharp comedic delivery anchored all three spots. The joke works because the edit and the performance sell the same idea: this guy is always one step ahead.

We shot over two days in Houston on Camlock's internal camera package, a Canon C80 with Angénieux prime lenses, keeping the crew small and the days nimble. Producer Dani Ronan, who knows Houston well, ran the production, while Megan Carroll captured social content and photography simultaneously alongside the main unit. That parallel workflow is how a two-day shoot yields three broadcast spots, four social spots, and 16 stills without a bloated footprint.

This project also marks an ongoing collaboration: it's our third with Blair Jenkins since our GSD&M days, and every one has been a genuine creative partnership. J&J Exterminating walked away with a complete multi-format campaign from one tight production, and we're looking forward to the next round.
